Now based in Miami, but originally from Venezuela, Mariana Monteagudo has been creating doll sculptures out of mixed materials since the late ’90s. Latex, ceramics, paints and other media share space with the dolls in various stages of the process. Mariana, like many of us, laments the way her space usually has the upper hand:
“I have a bittersweet relationship with my workspace. I wish it was more neat and organized, but unfortunately (or fortunately) my creative process is not pre-conceived and does not have a specific method. It has its own independent, unstoppable and organic flow that moves with a sort of inner energy and follows no system or set of rules… It’s a really amazing feeling of being pulled by this invisible or universal power that just goes beyond your ‘self’….
In the process, it leaves a great deal of mess… !”
