Sofa So Good is a full sized, fully functional 3D printed lounger.

Details: Designer Janne Kyttanen’s Sofa So Good is a full sized, fully functional lounger coated in high polish copper and chrome. It is the largest and most complex end use product ever made using a 3D Systems ProX 950, one of the largest format 3D printers available today.

The groundbreaking design pushes the limits of weight reduction, weighing in at only 2.5 kilos, an invaluable development that can be utilized for countless applications.

The lounge chair measures 150 x 75 x 55 centimeters and was created using a mere 2.5 liters of material. Sofa So Good was 3D printed in 6000 layers, each just 0.0099 centimeters thick.

It’s the unique diamond geometry that makes the lounger functional, creating a super strong structure that can support a person weighing up to 100 kilos.

Says Kyttanen, “My exploration of optimized structures has been inspired by the anatomy of silkworm cocoons and spider webs. How can these kinds of geometries be applied to save material used in production and construction? If we are able to apply these principles of structure optimization to manufacturing, transport costs will be marginal, energy consumption will be significantly less – there is a whole range of benefits in our future that we can’t even fathom today.”
