How people hold cups inspired the Kop handle.
Details: Designer Akiko Oue’s Kop cup handle resembles handles of a different sort, door handles.
Oue observed people drinking from cups. Says she, “I considered what the relation cup and handle is, and observed how people hold the cup when they drink.”
“The handle is like a knob or to pinch the cup.”
“The size of cup is just fit to your hand. This 200ml size of cup comes from daily use. It is just nice size for having a cup of coffee. There are two types, kop with handle and without handle.”
All the parts were considered, even upside down the handle is functional. “Because the handle is protruded from the brim, when it is upside down, there is little opening between brim and handle to let fresh air into or easy to dry after the washings.”
Adds Oue, “Red, Black, White Clay. These three colours are primary colour and these colour make up the natural colour palette by mixing them. Mixing Red and White clay become Beige and gray tone is from mixture of white and black clay. Black, Gray, Light Gray, White, Beige, Red. All colour is natural colour from clay.”
To avoid stains only the inside of the cup is glazed with clear. As the outer surface of the cup is not glazed, users feel the raw texture of ceramic when it’s held.
