A' Design Award & Competition World Design Rankings: Top Countries
by Harry / January 4, 2015
This sponsored post is brought to you by A' Design Award and Competition. Slicing and dicing the winning numbers from five years of A' Design Award & Competition stats offers answers to questions you might not have even thought to ask, like, which countries have scored the most award hardware, and what do they do worst and best?

(Click the images below for full sized images)

All of this is found in the annually updated A' Design Award World Design Rankings. The current 2010-2014 edition, based on the total of five years of results, covers 79 countries, with the USA again in the top slot (179 awards and a score of 636), followed in order in the Top 10 by Turkey, Hong Kong, Italy, Great Britain, Japan, China, Brazil, Germany, and Greece (bumping Korea from its #10 position on the 2010-2013 chart).

Crunching the data for individual countries reveals their Design Strengths, Design Weaknesses, and Design Opportunities, presented in handy tables. Take, for example, China, where Interior Space and Exhibition Design is the strongest category, Home Appliances Design the weakest, while Packaging Design is the best bet for improvement.

The rankings are based on individual designer entries from the 79 countries represented, and you can see it all at World Design Rankings.

For more results analysis, also check out the relative ranking of all 924 A' Award-winning designers, artists and architects from 2010-2014 (#1 for the second year running is Hakan Gürsu of Designnobis in Turkey, with a total of 46 wins and 8 runner-up works), at Designer Rankings. And, 76 individual design categories are ranked for competitiveness and difficulty at Design Classifications.

On the way to all new results in the 2015 competition (Feb. 28 deadline details below), here is an international selection of MOCO picks from last year's winners:

Australia: Folded Tones Rug by Enoch Lieu, Golden A' Design Award Winner in Furniture, Decorative Items and Homeware Design Category. A simple rug challenges its inherent flatness by creating a strong 3D optical illusion, using simple lines and only three colors for maximum adaptibility to any decor. Poland: Malopolska Garden of Arts (MGA) performing arts centre & mediatheque by Ingarden & Ewý Architects, Platinum A' Design Award Winner in Architecture, Building and Structure Design Category. An arts complex, both outstanding and harmonious, internalizes its surroundings to bring "new spatial order to the old backyards and ruined buildings in Rajska and Szujskiego streets in Krakow."

Italy: Up Bathroom Collection by Emanuele Pangrazi, Platinum A' Design Award Winner in Bathroom Furniture and Sanitary Ware Design Category. Improving creature comforts, a more accommodating upward tilt of the seating plane in toilet and bidet provides the design motif for this bathroom collection.

Great Britain: Black Shadow H-E Concept Hydrogen-Electric Hybrid Motorcycle by Mark Norton Menéndez, Platinum A' Design Award Winner in Vehicle, Mobility and Transportation Design Category. This concept bike combines retro café racer styling with contemporary eco-friendly techonologies, in a head-turning package that should reach upwards of 100 mph, quietly.

Japan: 1967 Bar Lounge by GLAMOROUS co., ltd., Golden A' Design Award Winner in Interior Space and Exhibition Design Category. Transparently titled, this casual lounge on one of Tokyo's busiest streets invokes a European-style salon circa 1967 (which also happens to be the birth year of three of the bar's key people).
