Functional 3D Printed Ceramics by Olivier van Herpt

Dutch designer Olivier van Herpt has created his own 3D ceramics printer to print objects at "human scale".

Details: Frustrated that desktop 3D printers on offer were unable to produce things at a human scale (large and medium scale functional design objects) van Herpt developed his own 3D printer. His 1.50m Delta 3D printer is capable of making 80 cm tall 3D printed ceramic objects such as vases and bowls.


"The objects made with desktop 3D printers were also low in heat resistance and could not be food safe." says the designer. "Industrial 3D printers could make food safe objects for everyday use but these would be too costly to produce. I ended up spending two years working on 3D printer and 3D printing process that could make large and medium scale functional 3D printed ceramics to solve this problem."


"Previously one could only make small 3D printed ceramics such as small cups. I was interested in full scale imposing ceramic objects, resolved objects that could serve as a centerpiece of a room. I explored randomness, textures and layers. Through much experimentation and iteration I was able to complete this project."


The Sediment collection, shown here, has some of the thinnest 3D printed ceramics layers available today.
