The Design Book
by Tara Milroy / August 29, 2013
An illustrated compilation of 500 everyday items, The Design Book documents the history of design from the 1600's to present day.

The purse-sized book from Phaidon features a wide range of objects, including furniture, lighting, accessories, tools, and electronics. Some are familiar works by big name favourites like Eames and Alessi, while others from unknown designers.

Each page of the book is dedicated to a different object, featuring an image and a short description of the piece, its historical context and significance, and often interesting tidbits of information about the work or its designer.

Unlike many design history books, The Design Book has a current contemporary feel to it - its small sized format, the fact that many pieces are still in production, and the inclusion of objects, old and new, that are actually used everyday.

From a pair of scissors and a safety pin, to an iPhone and a Dyson fan, The Design Book is a modern guide to iconic domestic design. Available at Amazon.
