Florian Pucher's ROOTS of Vegetal Rug was made to complement Vitra's iconic Vegetal chair by Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec.

Says Pucher, "As every plant needs roots to grow, the logical extension of Vegetal chair's nature-based design is a rug that literally roots the chair. The rug does not merely act as a bland background onto which the chair is placed but essentially forms Vegetal chair's origin."

The Vegetal chair's footprint is projected onto the ground and then extended outwards into an organic network of spreading roots. Using the Bouroullec's color palette for the chair, various rug designs are generated and greater variety is achieved by introducing additional cross-lines into the root pattern.

Roots of Vegetal was Pucher's entry for VITRA's 2012 Vegetal Redesign Competition and was awarded second prize. Created with help from Sophia Liu Bo.
