Step-Well House by Yoshiaki Oyabu Architects

Via @designboom, a house on a narrow lot in a dense residential neighbourhood in Japan, with the only unobstructed face to the north, embraces a three-storey central light well to open it up to sun and air.

Tempered glass is used for structural safety. The south wall of the well is lined with acrylic mirror and corrugated plastic sheet, "to ensure a level of transparency and openness, and maintain visual communication between the family members." More at Yoshiaki Oyabu Architects. Photo: Akira Itoh.
