by Harry / March 18, 2012

Designer Erich Ginder has created a wallpaper with a floral motif using ASCII symbols, a character-encoding scheme originally based on the English alphabet.

ASCII codes represent text in computers, communications equipment, and other devices that use text. In the early years of personal computing, simple graphics using ASCII codes became a popular art form.

The ASCII art phenomenon continues to exist in the social and mobile web, though now often constrained to a 140 character canvas to fit into a Twitter message.

Ginder's wallpaper is a more abstract form of ASCII art that, unlike screen-based ASCII art, reveals itself when seen from a distance.
