Mubadala World Tennis Championship Trophy by Maxim Velcovsky

“For the 4th time in history, Lasvit, leading designer and manufacturer of light and glass installations, was again the official trophy sponsor of the Mubadala World Tennis Championship 2013 – a place where the global tennis season starts. Mubadala World Tennis Championship is one of the region’s most eagerly anticipated sporting events which brings six of the world’s top ten tennis players to the Abu Dhabi International Tennis Complex in Zayed Sports City. Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, Andy Murray, David Ferrer, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Stanislaus Wawrinka were the stars of the tournament this year. The Mubadala World Tennis Championship took place December 26-28, 2013.

The tournament, which takes place in the desert, is connected to the trophy by sand, the main material used to make glass. This year it was well-known designer, Maxim Velcovsky who designed the trophy and gave it the name ‘Sand.’ ‘The inspiration for this trophy was sand, which surrounds the Emirates. It is an omnipresent material. I was fascinated by the concept of enlarging and studying sand under a microscope, observing the many layers and shapes, which are themselves, already minute sculptures. I used these structures as inspiration in the trophies stylization,’ says Maxim Velcovsky.

The trophy was created using glass-blowing technique. A glass blower with a pipe stick adds grain after grain upon each other, much like an ant building it’s nest, creating the silhouette of the trophy. Lasvit glass blowers have hand blown and hand crafted both trophies – for the winner as well as for the second finalist – from the best quality Bohemian crystal.” lasvit.com
