Designer Koichi Shimohira from Studio Tands sent us this interior project, a Japanese cuisine restaurant called Gion in Haruyoshi adjacent to downtown Fukuoka, Japan, that makes good use of its limited square space. Facing a busy city street, the curved entryway with a large cutaway window that greets guests was designed to distance customers from the hustle and bustle outside. Inside, three volumes are painted white in a box of jet black space. The white volumes, molded respectively in accordance with function, are an iconic presence in the space. The result is a quiet, sensual setting, with abundant wood furniture and panelling offset by a touch of color, all highlighted with discreet, strategically placed ambient light.
