Room & Co 888.404.ROOM
Retail Stores: Mar 31, 2005

room-co-shelving.jpgA showroom in Sacramento might stretch the definition of San Francisco Bay Area a little thin, but Room & Co. deserve a mention both for their stock - which includes some really terrific and original pieces of furniture, as well as flooring, lighting and a huge range of home accessories and art - as for their fantastic service and competetive prices. Quite a few of their customers do come up the 90-odd miles from the Bay Area, and there's no reason you shouldn't as well - or at least stop on your way up to Tahoe or elsewhere in the mountains.

difley-painting-red-sm.jpgAt his San Francisco studio, painter Raymond Difley constructs mixed-media painted panels that are a sort of meditation on the rectangle. His bold and colorful work is spare and in some cases deceptively simple, and a good complement for the lines and 90 degree angles of the modern / contemporary home.

Difley has recently been part of Elizabeth Starr's SOMA Holiday Exhibition group show at the Off Market Gallery, as well as a holiday show at Propeller in Hayes Valley. In April and May his work will be part of two separate shows at Art Gotham in Manhattan, and he'll have a show with Stuart Sheldon at San Francisco's Ligne Roset in September 2005.

Greenlight Concepts 800.338.3320
Designers: Mar 10, 2005

greenlight-concept-lamp.jpgSan Francisco-based designer Daniel Krivens and his firm, Greenlight Concepts, make lighting - hanging fixtures and lamps - from recycled traffic lights. As the old lights are replaced with new, super-efficient LED models, truckloads of colored glass go into landfills across the country. Luckily, these folks have found a good use for all that glass, and have found a number of interesting ways to integrate the material into their lamps. Some look like UFOs and all are quite striking.

You can have them in any color - as long as it's a shade of red, yellow or green.

The Slanted Door 415.861.8032
Hotels & Restaurants: Mar 7, 2005

slanted-door-private-room-s.jpgThe Slanted Door, one of my favorite restaurants in the city, recently moved from their Mission location (the old Valencia street room will reopen this year with a menu of "the street foods of Vietnam," although, I assume, not at street-foods-of-Vietnam prices) to the new, fantastically upscale Ferry Building, where diners at the window tables have a wonderful view of the bay and the menu is even more impressive. Very upscale Vietnamese in a beautiful wood and glass environment designed by Olle Lundberg.

vanmeter-drawing.jpgAward winning (including a charter award from the Congress for New Urbanism) San Francisco- and Denver-based architectural design firm Van Meter Williams Pollack specialize in modern urban infill projects - primarily housing and mixed-use projects - with a typically open, airy look. They are currently working on the closed UC Laguna campus in the Market area with a mix of housing, retail and office space, and are also actively developing a loft project in the Rockridge area of Oakland. The recently finished lofts in Piedmont, the adaptive reuse of a school building in Fremont, and many projects in the Denver area.
