Turn a great local beer into a great whiskey? Wheatfish Whiskey is an all-local story, a collaboration in the Rocky Mountain back country of Montana between the Great Northern Brewing Company microbrewery, and handcrafted, small-batch distillery, the Glacier Distilling Company. First, Great Northern fermented a custom mash of wheat and barley, based on their Wheatfish beer, then, Glacier distilled the mash into whiskey and aged it in oak. The 90-proof result is described as sweet and slightly spicy, with a glow of warmth. The first 400 bottle batch has just been distributed regionally in Montana—a little hard to find, perhaps, but now you know what you are looking for.
