Ahhh, Swedish beer! That’s the deal from Södra Maltfabriken, a progressive young microbrewery, opened in the south side of Stockholm in mid-2011, and Stockholm’s first and only. The founding partners, Niklas Hjelm (successful digital creative director) and Magnus Mårdberg (successful chef and restaurant owner), came into the project with a fresh attitude and the barest of homebrewing experience. Answering only to themselves is cool, they say: “We do as we please. We have no external shareholders or investors who decide how things should be. We brew what we think is good.” On offer now, there’s a rich Rude Lager, a powerful India Pale Ale named Poking IPA, with a 7.5% alcohol kick, and the “clean, refined” Initial Pale Ale. Södra has 12 2,500 liter fermentation tanks in play, for a respectble annual capacity 300,000 liters/year. Here’s to indie beer!
