In that land where horsepower rules, and gasoline is incidental, the new Shelby 1000 rolls with the giants. This handbuilt customization of the 2012 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 reworks the stock 5.4 liter V8, adding new rods, crank and pistons, flows the heads, upgrades the cooling and exhaust, replaces the supercharger, tunes it, then “sprinkles it with a little Shelby magic.” The suspension is beefed up, the brakes are bigger, and a respectable 950 hp is achieved for the street version, with over 1100 hp for the Shelby 1000 S/C track version. Although there are well over a dozen over-1000 hp cars with production status, the Shelby 1000 stands out from the aerodynamically low-slung pack by maintaining an American muscle car profile. The limited edition package, every build documented and numbered, starts at $149,995, plus the original GT500—Shelby estimates around $200,000 for a street-ready machine.
