Rather stunning, absolutely eyecatching, the Richard Mille RM056 Watch is a tour de force of engineering, a split-second chronograph with a case fabricated entirely from sapphire. A single block of sapphire was milled, cut into three sections, and reassembled with the movement inside. The watch includes the world’s lightest split-second tourbillon, a classic mechanical touch, the tech breakthrough that centuries ago made all-mechanical watches possible, and the source of the traditional clock ticking. Richard Mille is a newcomer to the world of horlogy, established in 2001 with a high tech approach, taking cues from the aeronautics and racing car industries in the use of exotic materials. The RM056 is in a limited edition of five. Cost: $1.65 million. Sapphire is brittle so…don’t drop it.
