Triple-malt! A standout Scotch in at least two ways, Monkey Shoulder Whisky is a small-batch blend from a distillery that is one of the very few to still turn its malt by hand, and apparently the very first to blend three malts. Malt Master David Stewart combines Speyside malts from Glenfiddich, Balvenie, and Kininvie, matures them in bourbon casks, and selects only 27 casks at a time for bottling. The name is a fond nod to the past, the “monkey shoulder” injury suffered by malt turners that is no longer a problem thanks to better manual methods. If you’re partial to taste previews, how about bananas, chocolate and vanilla essence, with a touch of woodspice. There you go, a novel addition to your Scotch collection, and it comes with three metal monkeys on the bottle! Just breaking out of the UK, Monkey Shoulder is possibly available near you, or from their e-shop.
