Clever as a road-ready kit, the Akai MPC Fly takes the industry-standard MPC and scales it into its own case with space to fit an iPad 2—instant hardcore music workstation to go. The MPC, which now stands for Music Production Center (M used to be for MIDI), is the classic drum machine/sampler, evolved steadily since its introduction in the late 1980s, a beat production mainstay, the backbone of many, many hits, and rightfully a musical instrument on its own. The Fly version, specifically paired with the iPad 2, comes with an iPad app that hooks it all up. The case is double-hinged, to sit up or lie flat. Li-ion batteries provide the juice.
