Castor Design launched their appropriately named “Deadstock” collection at their Parts & Labor club in Toronto’s Parkdale last night. The collection of lamps and table are made from “neglected industrial parts, old products and raw building materials” that were collected over the span of several months. Most notable of the found materials, Carrera marble from a Bank of Montreal refurbishment project in Toronto.
Says designer Brian Richer, “We like to take old materials that would otherwise become waste and re-contextualize their use”.
Above, from left to right:
- visitors were greeted by a large interactive screen featuring the Castor portfolio (we still have fond memories of the their dining Winnebago)
- the bar lit with Castor’s previous light collection, Extinguisher Lights, made of decommissioned fire extinguishers
- Cannon Ball pendant lamps incorporating old lighting shades stamped into metal balls with a textured coating and glass lenses
- Catherine table lamp with a brass body, chunky marble base and a cold cathode fluorescent light source
- beside the fully functional wood stove (it was hot in there), Axis Floor lamps with adjustable legs machined from a solid piece of aluminum
- and Castor’s Deadstock media CD, which was actually a vinyl LP, said Richer “hope you have a turntable” (we do)
