The Sitcom! Exhibition by Lucas Maassen
by Ted Savage / February 20, 2014
Layers deep: The Sitcom! Exhibition by Lucas Maassen, an intricately layered multimedia experience where everything is more than it seems, presents a parody of a formulaic American TV sitcom, and the opportunity to go behind the scenes with cast and props, leaving you questioning your perceptions of design exhibits and reality in general.

Details: An episode of The Sitcom! Chairs Being Funny was shot live in a TV studio installation as part of Dutch Design Week 2013. Standard sitcom elements - sets, props, characters - are subtly subverted, with talking chairs replacing people, normally anonymous, mass-produced objects replaced by local, artisanal items, furnishings finished (from a previous project) by Maassen's three young sons working by strict Dutch child labor laws, every seemingly familiar detail of the production carefully remade. Created in collaboration with Twan van Bragt and OddOne. Runs January 31 to March 30, 2014, at the MU artspace, Eindhoven, Netherlands.

Designer: Dutch designer/artist Lucas Maassen is well-known for work that playfully pushes, with high technological awareness, the way we see things, "a process of validation through perception."
