Empapeladas by Yolanda Herraiz & Kumi Furío

Given that we take paper for granted most of the time, it comes as a pleasant surprise to see it used in a poetic, ethereal way by Valencia designers Yolanda Herraiz & Kumi Furío, who created an intimate paper space called Empapeladas during Valencia Disseny Week.

The installation is based on the marriage of paper and light. By taking paper out of its usual context, the designers were able to shift the focus to some of its less appreciated aspects, such as its lightness and translucency.

Kumi Furío & Yolanda Herraiz immersed themselves in this project as a way to create for the sake of creating, an alternate reality to their everyday activities as designers.

The result was an exploration of paper's properties, its physical limits and capacity to provide structure. Every once in while there were quotes from various design professionals.

Note the stitching.

Although light is paper's main partner in this project, the importance of space cannot be discounted either. The installation is an inviting one; the soft light beckons from within and the arrangement of the panels creates an atmosphere that is at once soothing and stirring.
