Design the World: Zody Task Chair by Haworth

This post is sponsored by Autodesk. In the seven years since we began blogging here at mocoloco.com we've seen literally thousands of objects and products from almost every continent on the planet.

Only a small percentage get written up and posted. You could say we post our favorites, but a truer measure would be the things that we actually own and use. This is the first of a series of posts on the things the editors and contributors of MoCo Loco own and enjoy every day.

The Zody Task Chair

As one of the principal bloggers at MoCo Loco one of my favorites is a piece of office furniture I spend a lot of time with - the task chair I use practically every day for hours at a time - a Haworth Zody. I've used it for a few years now and though I've had the opportunity to try practically every popular task chair currently made, I've never found the Zody wanting. It's not the most luxurious or technically equipped, in fact it's a bit austere, although I would say it's that very simplicity that makes it great for me.

Maybe it's because it was designed in Germany (by ITO design in collaboration with the Haworth Design Studio) that I find the design smart, uncluttered, "un"-ostentatious. Unlike others this chair discreetly incorporates its science; a patent pending user selected asymmetrical lumbar support system and a passive pelvic support, in fact the back support system was developed with the help of the Human Performance Institute at Western Michigan University. Zody is the first ever task chair endorsed by the American Physical Therapy association.

Made of cast aluminum and glass reinforced nylon the Zody chair is also surprisingly light and easy to maneuver. It's also more sustainable than most chairs, it's the first task chair certified as a Cradle to Cradle Gold product by MBDC (McDonough Braungart Design Chemistry, LLC). It contains up to 50% recycled content and its assembly energy is offset with green-e certified wind energy certificates.

But, above all that science, materials and sustainability, it's the comfort that makes or breaks a task chair. For my somewhat office-worn body, the Zody simply works. I can sit in that chair for hours on end and not feel like I did. It's why Zody is one of my favorite designs.
