"Flamingo Fever, Daly City, California"
Posted by sabine7 Photography | Apr 11, 2008
brouws_flamingo.jpg
In Jeff Brouws’s collection Freshly Painted Houses (from the American Typologies series), the viewer is treated to an ice cream palette of tract housing in Daly City, California. At first, one can almost be forgiven for jumping to the conclusion that the artist simply kept painting the same house over and over. The houses are particularly stunning against the bright blue sky. Yet why is it these houses make great photos but awkward neighbourhood features?

"Decampment"
Posted by sabine7 Photography | Mar 31, 2008

Megan Baker has been taking photographs since she took hold of the Polaroid at age four. In addition to concert photography, Baker’s photo focus is on abandoned houses and small towns that have suffered economic distress. Decampment is an incredible series that takes us inside and out along this journey. The light, the colours, the mood – these photos linger. And we almost hate to bring this up, but Megan Baker happens to be sixteen-years-old.

"Jean-Michel Basquiat"

Vintage Portraits from the 1980s by Jeannette Montgomery Barron are the topic of an exhibition that opens today at ClampArt in New York. Barron captures some of the most significant artists of the time in moments of great calm that exude an intimacy, made even softer by the use of natural light. These are black and white photographs that the viewer wants to step into, into a place where there may be a chance to see the artist a little less cloaked.

"Division Chief"

falchook_divisionchief.jpg
Jason Falchook’s photography allows us to share in the landscape of the commuter who goes from one destination to another, visually linking everything in between. So leaves blend into light standards; sky into rooftops then sunny facades, shady foundations, dirty snow into one big puddle and then the reflection of it all; walls into fences into sparse grass, punctuated by a bench. Where is the viewer in relation to these contemporary landscapes? Does the viewer become the commuter? Does the commuter become the landscape?

"Untitled (Nicola Vinci)"
Posted by sabine7 Photography | Mar 5, 2008

Nicola Vinci’s photos can be, at first glance, perceived to be the standard portraits of children or peaceful interior shots. But the next blink will change that impression and the viewer becomes aware of a sadness that hovers or even permeates the photographs. Further explorations in Vinci’s work and the viewer starts to feel uncomfortable and a little afraid, but every once in a while there are glimmers of something else, a defiance perhaps?

"The Birthday Party"

Photographer Vee Speers entitles her series of children as Birthday Party, but there is little festive about this group of children who are dressed up with seemingly nowhere to go. They cast looks of ennui at the camera and appear as small adults. What are they thinking as they look at the camera? Are they anxious for the cake and ice cream? If so, they do not show it. Rather, they almost look as though they might be ready to go home.

A love for travel often goes hand in hand with a passion for art and design. Photographer Brian Finke combined his skills with a whole lot of air miles to build his Flight Attendants series of photos that convey the glamour and intrigue that still surrounds the profession. Finke shot his subjects on the job as well as before and after work, allowing us a glimpse into the lives we don’t often see once the plane has landed.

Wendy Cooper is a student at the Savannah College of Art and Design whose photography is a way for her to explore the mysteries of life. Vulnerability and fragility are countered by strength and desire, all of which are proof that we have made a presence. Cooper’s photos are often atmospheric images of scenes set by light at various times of day or haunting black and whites.

"Bag"

Hendrik Kerstens has used his daughter, Paula, as the subject of his photography for many years, but he often portrays her in the tradition of the Dutch masters. Vermeer is an artist that comes to mind when the viewer gazes upon the austere portraits of a young woman who looks out serenely, basking in the characteristic Dutch light. Modern accoutrements accessorize the portraits; hoodies and plastic bags of today replace the wimples and head wraps of old, and the camera is the new oil paint.

"Schattenseite"

Sebastian Lemm’s upcoming show features a body of work called Schattenseite, which means dark side or down side in reference to the process that results in eerie hyper-realistic photography. Lemm uses a combination of techniques that include 6x7 film, digital scanning and image editing to see his ideas become creations that are at once abstract and yet very specific. Partially double-exposed pictures become portraits of branches that are vibrant compositions with much movement and force.

Award-winning photographer Chris Anthony has a new show at the Corey Helford Gallery in Culver City. I’m the Most Normal Person I Know is a series of works that put Anthony’s collection of vintage lenses from 1870 to 1910 to good use. Anthony uses materials such as cheesecloth, doll parts, papier maché, velvet, dress forms, mannequins and tattered clothes to create haunting scenes of a place just beyond the world we know.
