"Street Motion, Freerun, Parkour" by Alex & Cocco
Posted by sabine7 Photography | Jun 29, 2009

alex_cocco_parkour1.jpg
Alex & Cocco have updated their Parkour series by adding new images to the collection. These aerial jumps with particles are part of the Street Motion, Freerun, Parkour portfolio and are presented as shot, without any sort of post-production. The subjects pop from the black space, which, as a background, allows the eye to focus on the movement and the beauty of the body. These displays of sheer energy and power are awe-inspiring and almost unbelievable. The art is both in the performance and the photography.

"Morning Glory" by Ariana Page Russell
Posted by sabine7 Photography | Jun 23, 2009

page_russell_morning_glory.jpg
Artist Ariana Page Russell has a tendency to blush. But instead of letting a skin sensitivity impede her, she has made temporary tattoos out of photographs of her affected skin in various shades of reds and pinks. She then makes patterns out of these, scans them, creates the tats and adorns the skin with them. Intention makes all the difference. This body of work is entitled Dressing, where blush becomes fashion.

"Blanc" by Massimo Gardone
Posted by sabine7 Photography | Jun 12, 2009

gardone_blanc_blue.jpg
Massimo Gardone started his journey through photography in 1982 and since then the flower has always been a protagonist in his work. Companies such as Foscarini, Moroso, Ceramica Viva, Nodus and Aboca have used Gardone's florals in the designs of products such as lamps, tables, ceramics and carpets. Most recently, some of Gardone's video work included the amazing kaleidoscopic Foscarini installation at Superstudio Più. But the simplicity, fine detail and saturated colour of his Blanc flowers, as above, invoke an immediate reaction. Subtly spectacular is the Black and Dark series, an example of which is shown after the jump.

"Plunge" by Taliaferro Jones
Posted by sabine7 Photography | May 29, 2009

jones_plunge.jpg
Water is the dominant theme that flows through the oeuvre of Taliaferro Jones whose kiln cast glass sculptures often take on the form of waves. But Jones is also a photographer whose lens captures the many shades and textures of water, resulting in the rich cobalt of Plunge where the subject appears to be thick and syrupy, almost like a jelly, or the steel blue of rain pocked water that still reflects the light. Her subject is so simple, yet has the power to mesmerize.

Women Drying Laundry on the Gorse, Vale of Health, Hampstead Heath" by Scott McFarland
Posted by sabine7 Photography | May 28, 2009

mcfarland_gorse.jpg
Scott McFarland crafts his photographs by combining negatives to create a whole, yet the viewer is likely to take the finished product at face value. What is perhaps more noticeable in this new body of work is a sense of the anachronistic. Women drying laundry on bushes might well come back into vogue on a large scale, and we might have to turn back to the horse and buggy when we least expect it.

"Braces" by Nandita Scillitani
Posted by sabine7 Photography | May 18, 2009

scillitani_braces.jpg
Nandita Scillitani's photography has an experimental edge to it, with images that play with the viewer's comfort level. There is a compulsion to turn away, yet look again. Braces, however, is a little different, with a watery veil between the face and tiny violet forms, almost like sugar crystals. The face is a mere blurred backdrop to the hits of colour, light and tinted edges. Melt is a different story altogether, as the subject or person is clearly a key presence in the narrative. Cryogenics Study raises questions of a different nature.

"Portrait XII" by Sabine Dehnel
Posted by sabine7 Photography | May 13, 2009

dehnel_portrait_xii.jpg
Sabine Dehnel's Portrait series is made up of photographs based on her paintings, but each portrait is certainly interesting enough to stand on its own. Featured is the back of a woman's head, hair done elaborately and embellished with an odd variety of accessories. Yarn is woven through the hair; strange caps cover the scalp; spiders form a sort of lacey mantilla. Traces of paint, often orange or purple, are hinted at on her neck, as though the artist has used her as a canvas. What if the woman were to turn around? What surprises would we see then?

"Beatrice" by Winkler + Noah
Posted by sabine7 Photography | May 11, 2009

puppet_beatrice.jpg
The Puppet Show is series of work by Winkler + Noah that reminds us that children need to be children. By manipulating slightly the photographs of children aged from two to eight, the artists show us how easily we allow children to be turned into puppets or reflections of our will. They may look like dolls, but on no account should they be playthings. Of course, the subjects of these portraits have been nicely packaged. Would we get the same effect if less pretty portraiture had been presented?

Carousel by Rodolphe Foucher
Posted by sabine7 Photography | May 8, 2009

foucher_carousel.jpg
The colour in the work of Rodolphe Foucher is what holds the most appeal, whether in its subtlety or at its highest impact. The bright tones of this traditional carousel set against the clear blue sky evoke carefree times where one is so close to almost making a leap. Yet the much softer palette of a scene with a house perched upon a cliff combines both a sense of solitude and the tumultuousness of the waves below. And the cobalt of the tires turns them to gems.

"Aids in Odessa" by Andrea Diefenbach
Posted by sabine7 Photography | May 5, 2009

Aids in Odessa is a heart-wrenching photo essay of work by Andrea Diefenbach on an epidemic that has hit hard this port city of the Ukraine. This country holds the record for new cases of infection in Europe, and according to the artist's statement, "Estimates by the World Health Organization (WHO) indicate that as many as 160,000 individuals infected with HIV live in the city of one million." Diefenbach's work is a poignant collection of photographs that puts a few faces on a disease that is ravaging the pearl of the sea. Shown above is Natasha.

"Old Volumes" by Alex & Cocco
Posted by sabine7 Photography | Apr 30, 2009

alex_cocco_personal1.jpg
Alex & Cocco's new body of work includes a selection of photographs of old books shot where they were found. The volumes are not in the best of shape; sometimes their surroundings are just as shabby, which only serves to heighten the romance. The poetry books on the G shelf look especially poignant, as they seem unsure as to whether they shall ever be opened again. This series is a lot quieter than most of the previous bodies of work, suggesting that sometimes we just need to take a moment for a different type of reflection.
