"Sweet"

Lisa Bengtsson is a talented illustrator whose wallpaper has captured the attention of wallcoverings aficionados everywhere. We were curious about her portfolio, so here are a couple of examples to show a range of Bengtsson’s styles. Needless to say, Sweet was too good to pass up, but Bengtsson’s parachuting houses and collage-style peacock are just as delightful.

"The Side Trip to Normandy"

Maira Kalman is a celebrated illustrator known for her children’s books and recent illustrated edition of Strunk and White The Elements of Style, but recently published a compilation, The Principles of Uncertainty, of a yearlong series of columns for the New York Times. Kalman’s illustrations come with colour commentary and provide a glimpse into a point of view that is based on the distillation of her observations. Kalman’s illustrations are the type of artwork that sinks into the psyche and soon one finds that snippets of text begin to accompany one’s own everyday visuals.

"Night Life"

Moira Millman’s website came to our attention via Netdiver’s Best of Year. Millman’s illustrations are colourful and full of whimsy, yet also very informative when used in an editorial context. Millman brings any illustration to life by creating characters and narratives that speak clearly of the context. Night Life is the perfect girls’ night out image and Light Up Your Life would be great for a furniture and lighting blog, whereas The Nature of Trees tells more of a story.

"Slowly he started to question"

Peter Sís grew up in Communist Prague, drawing on the sly and reading forbidden books. His work as an animator allowed him to travel and eventually seek asylum in the U.S. When Sís moved to New York in 1984, he started his career as the author/illustrator of children’s books. His illustrations are rich, layered tapestries of incredibly fine pen and pencil work, detailing works of his creation that stem from his experiences and observations. Freedom of Expression is Peter Sís’s first New York exhibition and is a good sampling of work that reinforces the importance of freedom and a reminder to viewers to avoid taking it for granted.

"Fluid"

Artist and illustrator Julie West has a portfolio full of mixed media goodies and characters in subdued shades. It is hard to read their faces, as they seem so stoic and resigned, but if you look hard enough you may catch the glimpse of a half smile. There is something about them that gives them an air of strength and even the gangly girls don’t seem as wispy as most. It is well worth exploring West’s work because it is hard to predict what will turn up.

"Mr. Turtleman"

Jason Sho Green started out as an electrical engineer, not even really aware that illustrators existed. Somehow a lifetime of doodling led to a career change and now he’s catching up on all the art and pop culture he missed out on when he was in a lab. This artist has been influenced by a childhood split between California and Japan, but it is clear that a lot of inspiration comes from a healthy imagination if Mr. Turtleman is anything to go by.

"Storyteller"

Lilly Piri is an Australian illustrator whose coloured pencil works are dreamy interpretations of a wide variety of narratives. The Storyteller is an apt choice by which to present her, as Piri’s work is another storytelling medium. Her Alice (with the White Rabbit, of course) is striking because of the dark hair, but once we are drawn in, we cannot help but notice the similarities between Tweedledum, Tweedledee and the baby pig. Piri’s is lovely, gentle work that has to be looked at carefully and attentively.

"Grenade Canvas"

Shepard Fairey’s new exhibit of politically charged works is entitled E Pluribus Venom (out of many, poison) is derived from E Pluribus Unum (out of many, one), a phrase used by the U.S. government. Fairey suggests that the loss of individual power to homogeny is not the ideal. The venom Fairey refers to is both the poison in the system as well as the anger of those who are against it. The work in this series is reminiscent of propaganda posters, but these ones clearly advocate peace.

Luke Feldman is the illustrator and animator behind Skaffs, a collection of colourful designs where sexy chicks run rampant, or cute ones fly. Feldman’s characters are endearing as they go boldly through a landscape of feathery tufted trees, an assortment of roots, bugs and flowers, and flying aliens that are a cross between amoebas and jellyfish. Decorating decks and decals, Skaffs also include animations that feature Berpunzel, a naïve and overly optimistic little boy and Irk and Miff who explore the wonderful world of relationships.

"Life in Poland in the 80’s"

Jan Feliks Kallwejt, based in Warsaw and Hamburg, is a graphic designer and illustrator whose work is very punchy and pops with colour and boldness of form. His projects involve a mixture of sports, music and lifestyle themes, but our favorites are the illustrations of Life in Poland in the 80’s, followed by the football pictograms, some of which are quite amusing. And who can resist his collections of graphic badges?

"Barcelona and Cooking"

Nathan Jurevicius is a Melbourne illustrator with a great cartoon style and fantastic colour schemes who often depicts situations set off against imaginary backgrounds where the octopus and the snowman each have a role. Insects and animals share the stage with his human characters while snowglobes and pieces of meat are not to be forgotten. Jurevicius’ sense of rhythm permeates his pieces with a poppy, trippy vibe. A strong sense of humour is evident, but take a good look, for sometimes unexpected shadows do lurk.
