Art Basel Miami Beach 2007 - Stalking Ingmar Bergman

If one were to purchase this Spencer Finch, where would it go? We'd consider the front window or at least ensure it be seen from the street, these colours are too good not to share. But any purchase at Art Basel takes a lot of what Mel Bochner covers in his oil on velvet (after the jump), Money. And in many cases, bags of it, especially if one is shopping for some Takashi Murakami.

Bloom
Posted by sabine7 Books | Dec 30, 2007
books_bloom.jpg
Bloom by Paul Solberg is a book of photographs that focus on the flower as nature’s design. The photos are simply stunning and are excellent subjects for drawing or painting. Solberg has taken these flowers, petals and blooms into the studio and through his photographs allows us to examine them as closely as he has. The flowers are at their peak, compelling in a clean, modern approach to shape, texture, colour and interaction with light.

Hardcover, 96 pages. Glitterati, 2005. $21.90 at Amazon.

The Creative Review Blog ran down their top stories of 2007, according to page views, and this gave us a chance to watch Cadbury’s gorilla drummer ad again, as well as admire the Glue Society’s Google earth renditions of various Biblical events, like Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden.

Cool Hunting's Top 5 Photographers of 2007 piqued our interest by samples of Thomas Allen’s pop up pulp fiction and Taryn Simon’s off-limit zones.
Art Basel Miami Beach 2007 - ...later on they are in a garden ...

One forgets that everything is for sale, especially at Art Basel. The atmosphere is so far removed from a museum, especially with the champagne trolleys and the girls twisting the stems onto the plastic champagne flutes (Perrier Jouet at 14 bucks a glass FYI). All that to say, we didn't even bother asking how much the installation by Cerith Wyn Evans was going for, as wall space at home is at a minimum. The Damien Hirst cabinet after the jump would be a better fit. And we might just be able to squeeze in the Sylvie Fleury.

Art Basel Miami Beach 2007 - Tied

It's a wonder we managed to get shots without the hordes. There were thousands of shoppers at the Miami Convention Center, but remarkably no one was standing in front of these pink pieces by Franz West and Gunther Forg, incredibly striking so close to each other. Also intriguing was the embroidered sales receipt from Schipol, a piece by Gabriel Kuri and the caged birds by Eder Santos, both after the jump.

Art Basel Miami Beach 2007 - Big Baby

Art Basel Miami Beach was big, buzzing and the place to run into fave Art MoCo artists, as well as discover the works of artists who will become faves. We took a few snaps of sculptures and installations (it's just not fair to get snap happy with paintings or photos), which we'll be sharing over the holidays. Today we have Big Baby by Richard Jackson and some work by Yoshitomo Nara and a Trashstone by Wilhelm Mundt. Sure Art Basel has its detractors, but seeing SO MUCH great contemporary art in one place is exciting, not to mention convenient. The Puff Marshie (after the jump) is the piece that lured the camera out.

Merry Christmas from Art MoCo

“This wall marks the spot where over 40 people were killed during the first Intafada (the little holes along the top are from bullets). While Banksy was painting it a lot of people came over, some to shake his hand and others telling him to go away. Eventually the local MP was called out to diffuse the eighty-strong crowd that had built up (by which time Banksy had left and the piece was completed by the local kids).”

Merry Christmas from Art MoCo.

Art Basel Miami Beach 2007: Wrap Up
Posted by sabine7 Exhibition | Dec 24, 2007

basel_modernmoses.jpg
Well, with Art Basel Miami Beach unpacked with all my luggage, here’s one last postcard of some of my favorite art moments. The art was truly everywhere: from the penthouse of the Raleigh Hotel to the windows of Wahlgreen’s. Sadly, there was no way for me to be! Art Basel has grown to signify an event rather than the single fair and it was dizzying to be in the thick of art as an industry. It was an unparalleled opportunity to be surrounded by some of the very best contemporary art in the world. Not only was I able to see work by artists I love, many of whom have been featured on Art MoCo, but it was an excellent introduction to more who will be featured over the next few months. I got a laugh out of the ladies who approached the Modern Moses installation by Elmgren & Dragset featured by the Massimo de Carlo Gallery when they needed cash. More favorite moments (and photos) after the jump and more more shots from Art Basel Miami Beach throughout the holidays.

Puppies Behind Bars: Training Puppies to Change Lives
Posted by sabine7 Books | Dec 23, 2007
books_puppies.jpg
We don’t usually go in for cute, cuddly AND furry, but this book by Paul Solberg and Christopher Makos is full of heartwarming images of dogs that make a difference. Puppies Behind Bars: Training Puppies to Change Lives is a photographic look at an eighteen-week training program where eight-week-old puppies are placed with prison inmates who care for them. Once the training is complete, the puppies go on to work as service dogs in individual settings or government placements. It is definitely a feel-good program, but the pictures go further in opening our eyes to the power of the bond between man and dog.

Hardcover, 144 pages. Glitterati, 2007. $31.50 at Amazon.

"Winterwolken"

Nils Rainer Schultze is a Berlin lighting designer who transforms the bleak winter nights by using areas that are usually fine weather fountains to produce lighting sculptures. Instead of dispensing water, the fountains shed colourful light that transforms the urban landscape at a time before the solstice when we really appreciate it. Shown above is Winterwolken, an installation that changes colour when people approach. These are great examples of public art that make a difference.
