The Life and Death of Andy Warhol
Posted by sabine7 Books | Sep 30, 2007
books_bokris.jpg
The Life and Death of Andy Warhol by Victor Bokris is a great read about a complicated character who truly went from rags to riches with a whole lot of weirdness in between. This biography is rich in detail, and Bokris covers Warhol’s life from beginning to end without glossing over the quirks that went over the top. The book provides a lot of insight into a scene that was very much part of a changing urban landscape and paints a vivid picture of New York over three decades. This is an easy to digest primer on the post abstract expressionist America and the early days of pop art.

Paperback, 536 pages. Fourth Estate Classic House, 1998. $32.20 at Amazon.

The ancient Kabbalistic amulets, Samonglif, Sanoi and Sansoni, have been reincarnated as plush toys designed by Ken Goldman. The Kabbalah dolls represent the three angels that were sworn to protect children and are now available at FAO Schwartz.

Claudio Parentela has been an underground artist for a long time, connected with a slew of ‘zines and websites. These examples of his collage work display an energy that is evident in most of his work, which ranges from drawings to watercolours to comics. These lively personalities are an exuberant mix of emotions, intellect and gender, and boy, do they ever look as though they are up to something! Hands, facial features and hair all conspire to reel us in and hook us. This Parentela trio is dangerous.

Reed Danziger’s mixed media paintings incorporate layers of swirls, swoops and spots that merge to form a variety of patterns that blend fairly gently into a whole. Danziger’s tones are soft, but the areas of subtle colour are in contrast with bolder pockets. The viewer is compelled to go right into the painting and explore carefully, going from one area to the next. Danziger’s more recent works display a more abstract and free-flowing touch, an evolution from the flowerlike forms that we may have seen previously.

Oriol Nicolàs is a Barcelona-based artist and illustrator whose works are simple and bold. His use of line and colour is very effective, with striking results, especially through the use of red. The Red Ones, in fact, is a wonderful piece, and it is the combination of the hoods, the beards and the perspective that pull it all together. The detail of the two different pairs of footwear is also a nice touch.

German photographer Martin Klimas has a great technique for high impact shots. He releases ceramic figurines from a certain height in the dark. When they hit the ground, the sound causes the lights to suddenly go on and the moment is captured. Klimas goes through a lot of figurines for the cause and of course each explosive moment is different. Klimas’ photography begs the question: is it still life or action? Apart from the technical attraction of this series, there is also the matter of brazenly doing something we have always tried to avoid to doing.

Deborah Kass describes her new works as “feel good paintings for feel bad times”. What more can you ask for, given the times? Kass’ pop art pieces are bursts of vivid colour and straight up text that are anything but subtle. The artist uses the social and political climate of recent time to explore our sense of adjusted optimism. Reality has set in and we are no longer sure about our ability to make everything right.

"Untitled Silver 4"

Caitlin Masley’s recent series of drawings in ink, acrylic and graphite can be seen as detailed abstractions or perhaps as detailed maps where each and every building has been carefully accounted for, at least in spirit. The blank spaces are the waterways, all with such jagged shorelines, built up to the very edge, and the tiny spaces in between the greys and black the linking passageways. Some of these works are quite sizeable and one cannot help but wonder what thoughts flowed through the artist’s mind as she toiled.

Artist and illustrator Julie West has a portfolio full of mixed media goodies and characters in subdued shades. It is hard to read their faces, as they seem so stoic and resigned, but if you look hard enough you may catch the glimpse of a half smile. There is something about them that gives them an air of strength and even the gangly girls don’t seem as wispy as most. It is well worth exploring West’s work because it is hard to predict what will turn up.
