Pageantry of Plumage (detail) by John Newsom
by sabine7 / May 8, 2013

John Newsom took about 2 ½ years to complete each painting in the Bestiary series of work. The oil paintings start out as abstracts with rich impastoed textures that provide a subtle, almost secret, base for the dense depictions of a variety of birds and animals. These close-ups are but details from canvases that burst with colour and movement. Cockatoos, hummingbirds, butterflies, a sleepy owl and cardinals join parrots, raccoons and lizards in this visual adventure.
