Barbara Rachko's artistic practice is highly unusual: this artist uses Mexican folk art as subjects for her work in pastels on sandpaper. Seeking out masks, wooden animals and papier mâché figures on visits to Mexico, Rachko stages her characters upon the more familiar backgrounds of her homes. After photographing her sets, she then applies many layers of soft pastels on sandpaper. The results are vivid dramas that have something of the surreal about them.
