Based in Ottawa, David Lidbetter explores the wooded areas close to home and, working with oils on panel, compiles his impressions into compositions that can border on the abstract. Showing a preference for winter landscapes, Lidbetter is drawn to compositional opportunities offered by the white ground. The work and vistas are unmistakably Canadian; it is, indeed, difficult to avoid references to the legacy left by Tom Thompson and the Group of Seven. Wanderings, Lidbetter's upcoming exhibition, is a contemporary walk in the woods.
