It is clear that Maria Monteagudo is at yet another new stage in the evolution of her oeuvre. Monteagudo uses hard latex and other synthetic derivatives for the pieces in her new Humanoid series, a departure from her customary ceramics. The doll-like figures vary in size, stature and temperament; all are extremely compelling. The artist references "little heroes, versions of action figures, cartoon characters and Barbie dolls" as her sources of inspiration for this series, but there is an unexpected edge to the personalities that lie behind the big eyes.
