Best Before End by Simon Willems
by sabine7 / April 19, 2011

Simon Willems' paintings are fantasy-based works that appear as shadowy allegories. The painting above is from a series entitled A Certain Way to Fade, based on news accounts about hermits. After the jump is a piece from Altitude Sickness, "conceived in response to the idea of Hitler's mountain retreat at Berchtesgaden and its subsequent conversion to a tourist restaurant after World War Two." (Hamburger-based Stormtroopers, no less.) Willems uses his work to highlight the odd contexts in which we "carve out our preferences and dreams."
