Gavin Tremlett's portraits are disturbing in that they feature subjects who seem to know more about what they are looking at than we do. We can meet their gaze, but are the first to turn away, perhaps because we cannot quite handle the mysterious nature of their identities, partially obscured as they are. They peer through, nonetheless, not bothering about our discomfort. It's almost as though they will fade away, taking a part of us with them.
