Staring at the Lake 1 by Weng Fen
In recent series of photographs by Weng Fen, schoolgirls in pairs or groups look out to the lake, sea or mountains, backs to us, the viewers. They look out over the city from rooftop vantage points or sit on walls. The vastness of their world lies before them, yet they look so isolated with the camera lens trained on their faceless presence. We know we are of little significance in any big picture, but the artist manages to underline this adroitly, in such a way that we remark upon the loneliness almost as though we'd never truly grasped it before. Almost.
