Contentment Smoking by Joshua Petker
by sabine7 / April 27, 2010

Colour itself is the protagonist of some new work by Joshua Petker. Not used as a mere background, it is juxtaposed against black and white (in the form of figures) as a vivid contrast. Portrayed as the movement of smoke or clouds, or paint itself, colour is what draws the eye into the narrative. This body of work is about fashion and reinvention and how colour is used as an agent of change. Petker states, "This show explores my interest in the fleeting identities based on fashion and beauty, the idea that a look, a style, or fame itself can be an identity with purpose. Or, for others of a religious nature, how their belief in what happens after life constructs their identity and purpose while alive."
