Blue is a colour we associate with calm. Photographer Anouk Kruithof turns this expectation on its head when she catches her subjects unawares to project an image of surprise. Dressed in blue and posed against a plain blue background, the subjects are caught by the camera at a moment when they least expect it. Out of the blue. They have not been able to present the expression, pose or gestures they may have preferred. The viewer feels a sense of confusion, not knowing exactly where he or she is. And to make matters more complicated, a wall of 4000 books accompanies the portraits, with a video of the same wall. Suddenly there is a bang and the video wall walls down. The viewer is now caught in the same shock and perhaps reflects what the people in the photos may have felt.
