The Pictorial Webster's: A Visual Dictionary of Curiosities by John M. Carrera is a journey through the past to the imagery of the 19th century. A printer, bookbinder, and artist, Carrera restored the original engravings from Merriam-Webster dictionaries from 1859, 1864 and 1890 to create a visual reference of images of importance to the era. The book is a treat: the pictures will transport any reader or viewer to a rich place in his or her imagination, and stories will practically begin to tell themselves. Objects and items of every description are offered up fine detail. Inspired by a old 1898 dictionary found at his grandmother's Maryland farm, Carrera began the project as an exercise in bookbinding, only to become obsessed about the engravings at the back. The rest is history - history revisited.
