A New Home is a series of ten chromogenic prints by Toronto artist Stefanie Fiore, who takes a look at the homes of Italian-Canadian families in an attempt to capture a distinctive style that reflects the cultural shift that occurs through immigration. The homes have a palatial or museum air about them, ornately decorated in a formal manner to demonstrate prosperity. Success in a new land has been attained though hard work and is now on display for all to understand. Family photos and religious icons accessorize the dense layers of patterns and textures. Are these replications of scenes that have been left behind? Or the creation of a new cultural hybrid? A New Home is work that we can all recognize, somehow.
