Kopftheater (what a wonderful word!), or theatre of the mind, is the aptly chosen title of new work by Berlin-based Stefanie Guteil. The creatures that people her canvases are caricatures of the characters that surround her in Berlin, creating art and music and revelling late into the night. The chaotic influence of Bosch and Brueghel is hard to miss, as grotesque monsters are busy interacting on Gutheil's landscapes. Bits of foil and fabric are incorporated into the paintings where hounds, hares and stripes battle for attention. There is excitement and tension to this series of bold, multidimensional work that is at once jolting yet fascinating.

Kopftheater runs through February 20, 2010 at the Mike Weiss Gallery in New York.
