Wake by Maya Gold
by sabine7 / November 2, 2009

Influenced by time spent living in Israel, near both the sea and the urban landscape, Maya Gold captures the uncertainty of the times on canvas. Tiny female figures are pictured trying to paint an umbrella into bricks, sending signals for help or clutching a life preserver. The beauty of these paintings is the scale. The almost photo-realistic figure is surrounded by a flat, vast space that is sky, sea or brick, a tiny drop in the large bucket of reality. A sense of helplessness is evoked by the loneliness of the figure and a sense of impending danger is suggested by the perspective.
