Sabine Dehnel's Portrait series is made up of photographs based on her paintings, but each portrait is certainly interesting enough to stand on its own. Featured is the back of a woman's head, hair done elaborately and embellished with an odd variety of accessories. Yarn is woven through the hair; strange caps cover the scalp; spiders form a sort of lacey mantilla. Traces of paint, often orange or purple, are hinted at on her neck, as though the artist has used her as a canvas. What if the woman were to turn around? What surprises would we see then?
