The paintings in Jack Niven's recent oeuvre, Shift, blend pop renditions of flora and fauna with starker images of the human condition. A lot of Niven's work is influenced by his move to New Orleans before Katrina. Mules and other animals are important elements in Niven's work, and it is fascinating to see how the artist imposes them upon the landscape. The animal paintings pop, but Niven's landscapes on their own are just as appealing.
