The wooden sculptures in Matt Sellars' Empty Quarter exhibition are symbols of the effects of abundance. Consumption leads to loss when care is not taken to protect the resources that nature provides. Industrialization that is out of hand results in clear cuts, open pit mines and oceans that are getting emptier. The toy-like forms of Sellars' sculptures are deceptively simple, even cheerful in hue, perhaps a reflection of our happy-go-lucky acceptance of the situation we have blithely created.
