Los Angeles-based artist Lola opens next week with a new solo exhibition called The Wondermental, a series of paintings that chronicle a young boy's journey into the unknown. Twenty-two acrylics make up the somewhat haunting fairytale narrative that depicts themes of innocence, self-discovery and independence. Lola's palette is darker than it has been, and this adds to the mystery that surrounds the group of tableaus. Sailing ship headgear, a teeny panda, a quasi-invisible bunny and characters with wide heads and the narrowest of ankles are all part of Lola's magical landscape.
