"Mandala 453"
Photographer Bill Armstrong's liberal interpretation of the mandala is through the use of colour to form these visual maps for spiritual navigation. Armstrong produced these works, from the Infinity series, by setting the camera's focusing ring to infinity, thereby de-focusing the objects being photographed. Concentric circles of intense colour make up these modern mandalas. An exhibition of 35 of Armstrong's mandalas is currently on at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, through February 1, 2009.
