"Take Flight"
by sabine7 / July 3, 2008
Nate Frizzell caught our eye with a painting of a woman with a mask and a nest in her hair, but when we went exploring we found even more that we liked. Frizzell tends towards masks in his work, as mirrors for the avian life he also portrays, and the sky that surrounds his characters, often in flight of some kind. Even the stripes in the boy’s t-shirt are unable to resist, as they lift off. A piece of paper, symbolic of so much, becomes an airplane to soar in an earlier painting of a young children with hope ahead of him, and a group of young people are caught in the freefall of their lives.
