At first glance it may not seem obvious that Wang Xingwei was inspired by Giotto’s Lamentation for his own Untitled (Death of a Panda), but the lines and movement are definitely there. Just the characters and setting have been changed. Xingwei’s works can be quite surrealist, like the golfer amidst the watermelons and the air hostess who has fallen out of her plane and now hangs from a cliff, and while this expression certainly does flow through a lot of his works, it is by no means this artist’s only style.
