Ben Tour tries to infuse a different characteristic into each eye, so his portraits of females will look both strong and fragile at the same time. (As a kid he always started his drawings with the eyes first, then added everything around them.) Although Tour’s males are immediately recognizable as flawed, one has to look closely at the women he portrays in order to discern their complications. The layering of emotion and personality in Tour’s work is carefully transported there through ballpoint pen, Wite-Out, watered-down acrylics, inks and spray paint.
