Nicolae Comanescu’s collection of acrylics, Beach Culture in Bercsényi, depicts an urban Bucharest neighbourhood. The concrete jungle is as stifling and oppressive as a heat wave and the heat of the city streets can cause mirage-like visions when viewed in the side mirrors of the steel surfboards of the metropolis. Comanescu’s work is vivid, conjuring up the city during rush hour, too many sights and sounds, traffic jams abound. The high seas of the centre are rife with pirate ships, but all the men in the panama hats can focus on are the bikini-clad girls.
