Toronto artist Justine Fernie does the most colourful portraiture imaginable, imbuing her subjects with a touch of magic and allowing aspects of their personalities to shine through in a very non-traditional representation. Family groupings are far from the staid poses against velvet backgrounds; hair and skin play with every possible hue. The landscape around a Canadian cottage takes on tropical tones. Fernie’s work is playful without being cavalier, striking without jolting.
