The recent works of Cuban-born Enrique Martinez Celaya are soft escapes into another landscape. What makes these paintings work is the inclusion of the sole figure who connects to the scene on an emotional level, crossing the semi-frozen stream barefoot, caught in a ray of sunlight, blowing bubbles inn the meadow as the storm clouds gather or standing stock still against a snowy background wearing nothing but a coat. Now of course, one needn’t look to an artist’s background to makes sense of the work at hand, but it is fascinating to note that Martinez Celaya once was a student of physics and quantum electronics.
